EU Takes a Big Step for Circular Fashion!
The European Commission has just adopted new rules under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) to stop the destruction of unsold clothes, accessories and shoes across the EU!
Every year, about 4–9% of unsold textiles in Europe are destroyed before they’re ever worn, generating roughly 5.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions — almost as much as an entire country’s annual emissions.
What’s changing?
• From 19 July 2026, large companies will be banned from destroying unsold apparel, footwear and accessories. Medium-sized businesses will follow by 2030.
• Companies must disclose how much unsold stock they discard, using a standardized reporting format from Feb 2027.
• Only in specific, justified cases (e.g., safety or irreparable damage) will destruction still be allowed under supervision.
Instead of sending unused clothes to waste, brands are encouraged to explore reuse, resale, remanufacturing and donations — boosting circular business models and reducing environmental harm.
This is a major win for circular economy efforts, reinforcing sustainable production, smarter consumption and stronger transparency in the textile value chain. Let’s support innovation and digital skills that can help businesses adapt and thrive in this new circular landscape!
